Fangirly Exposed: The Hobbit Trailer!

One of my best childhood memories is of my brother and me laying underneath the coffee table in our living room and watching the Rankin Bass cartoon version of The Hobbit. It was made in the 1977, so Bilbo had a wildly dope Davy Jones haircut. I distinctly remember being scared out of my gourd by the cartoon Gollum, who was portrayed as a sort of frog-like thing with a turkey neck and no pupils. Oh, you don’t think that sounds scary? Then I guess you would have no problem watching these clips I’ve provided of the cave scene…

Ok, its over. You can open your eyes now.

Despite my Gollum anxiety I read the book several times during my formative years, resulting in a life-long love of all things Tolkien. That being said, I was pretty excited when they announced that a Hobbit movie was in the works. As if that weren’t enough, it’s starting to look like Peter Jackson is making this movie specifically for me. Obviously Mr. Jackson was not available for comment, but when you look at the hard evidence, there is really no other explanation. For example, there’s the cast. I mean, Aidan Turner, Richard Armitage, and Lee Pace  all in one movie? It’s like they made all their casting decisions based on my google search history! Seriously, though, look at these guys…

Aidan Turner, best known for playing Mitchell in BBC’s Being Human

Richard Armitage in North and South

Lee Pace in Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day

It really shouldn’t come as a surprise that I cannot stop watching The Hobbit trailer. Just in case you’ve been living in a Tolkien-free parallel universe, here it is.

There you have it! My nerdy little secret. If you’re as pumped as I am, feel free to gush in our comment section!

Fangirly Exposed: Dancing with the Stars!

Ellen and I really represent the two ends of the reality TV spectrum. She likes quality TV like The Voice and So You Think You Can Dance? I, however, like my reality TV to have a healthy helping of trash, which explains my love for the Real Housewives franchise (or really anything that comes from Bravo). And then there’s Dancing with the Stars. It’s easily the least trashy of all my reality shows, and yet it’s probably the one I’m most ashamed of. This mostly stems from the fact that I am at least 20 years younger than this shows target demographic. (Seriously, George Hamilton was a contestant on the show. Look him up, kids.) In an effort to change that, I’m going to list the most awesome moments from the last few years. So listen up youth of America! ‘Cause I’m about to rock your world with some gnarly ballroom dancing.

1) Tristan Macmanus- Honestly, where have they been keeping this guy all this time? For more than ten seasons, the best eye candy the show had to offer was super-douche Max. Thankfully the producers wised up and hired this babe as one of the professional dance partners. Oh yeah, and he can dance too. Here’s a clip of one of his best dances. If you can’t find him, he’s the sexy Irishman who can’t seem to keep his tounge in his mouth.

2) Katherine Jenkins’ freestyle- Is there anything this woman can’t do? I would hate her if she weren’t so freakin’ cool. Here’s her unbelievable freestyle. (Feel free to skip through the into garbage).

3) Chelsea Kane’s Viennese Waltz- Oh, Chelsea. Just thinking about you makes me a little sad. This girl was without question one of the best dancers to ever be on the show, and who do they give the mirror ball trophy to? A football player who couldn’t foxtrot his way out of a paper bag! This dance, set to the Harry Potter theme is probably one of my favorite dances of all time.

There you have it, folks. My secret shame. Watch the All Star season of DWTS, Mondays and Tuesdays on ABC!

Fangirly Exposed: “Back at One”

I may or may not have a Pandora playlist titled “Guilty Pleasures” that  may or may not be based on such artists as Mariah Carey, Spice Girls, Ace of Base, Britney Spears, and N*Sync that I may or may not listen to with alarming regularity (did you follow all that ambiguity).

While listening to this playlist at work today, I was treated to the lyrical poetry of Brian Mcknight’s “Back at One”.  I’m not sure how or when, but at some point I learned all of the words to this song.  I don’t even remember liking it that much.  Apparently, this song has some strong claws in my brain

In my defense, Mr. Mcknight makes it easy to learn the words to this song by literally laying them out in a step-by-step process.  “One, you’re like a dream come true.  Two, just want to be with you…”

Is this a blast to the past for you, too?

Fangirly Exposed: “You and Me” by Tiffany

Once upon a time, 4-year old Ellen loved The Jetsons Movie. It’s my mom’s fault, really (like most things). I was an impressionable youth and she recorded it onto a VHS from the Disney Channel. How could I say no?!

My favorite character of The Jetsons Movie was undoubtedly Judy Jetson. She was super into malls, she rocked the high pone, and all the intergalactic dudes were, like, way into her, which even little me had to appreciate. As totally rad as Judy was, the coolest part about her was that Tiffany did all of her musical numbers. Did I mention that The Jetsons Movie had musical numbers? We’re talking pure 1990 schmaltzy mall pop.

The pinnacle moment for me came when Judy/Tiffany sings “You and Me”. This song adds absolutely nothing to the story and, for some reason, it is accompanied by random 80’s MTV-esque images.

All of this is fine for a 4-year old to love, but the real thing I am embarassed about is how hard I had to look for it when I wanted to download it at age 21. Or how many times I have listened to it since then. Or how hard I rock out to it on my commute. But the truth is, I LOVE this song. It’s infectious, it’s pop-y, and it is great for car-dancing/car-belting. Anybody who can appreciate that is welcome to join me for a session sometime. Haters to the left.

Please observe the amazingness that is this song and accompanying bizarro video.

Fangirly Exposed!: The Trailer for Pitch Perfect

I have a problem.  Please know that I admit this knowing full well that this movie will not win any awards and it is still up in the air as to whether it will be any good, but I cannot stop watching the trailers and clips for Pitch Perfect.

Those who know me, know that I love a good song and dance number and maybe I am beginning to feel the loss of The Sing-Off, but I want to see this movie.  Nay, I’m excited for this movie.  Don’t ask me how it happened, because I’m not sure myself.  All I know is the first time I saw the trailer, I thought, “That looks kinda lame with funny lines from Rebel Wilson.”  Now, I have watched the scene of their underground a capella battle THRICE!  The fact that it is an “underground a capella battle” is bad enough, but they are also able to do impromptu harmonies and dance moves for “S&M”, “Let’s Talk About Sex”, “I’ll Make Love to You”, “Feels Like the First Time”, and “No Diggity”.  And Anna Kendrick raps!  Even with all of that implausibility, though, I still want to see it because it looks like it will be a good time.

Whew.  That feels better.  It’s great to get that out there.  Now, feel free to judge how you will.

Fangirly Exposed! : Bad Slasher Movies

We’ve all got cinematic skeletons in our closet. You know, the movies and TV shows that you desperately hope your friends and family don’t come across in the Recently Watched section of your Netflix account. My dirty little secret just happens to be… slasher movies.

I’m not even talking about the socially acceptable flicks that fall under this category, like the Scream movies, or Nightmare on Elm Street, or even Halloween and its many sequels. I’m talking about the nasty, gory, plot-less, mindless trash that your weird 30-year-old-cousin-who-still-listens-to-Creed wouldn’t watch. I recently stumbled across a revolting little gem called Shadow, in which four strangers are tortured by an inexplicably shirtless sadist in the middle of the Albanian wilderness. I watched all of that garbage. Twice.

Part of the reason I continue to feed my sick addiction is that, if you sift through the refuse long enough, you will stumble across a few that are surprisingly good. Not Oscar fodder or anything, but better than you would expect. My personal favorite is Behind the Mask: the Rise of Leslie Vernon. It’s pretty meta, so if that’s not your flavor then you might want to take a pass, but if you like self-referential horror movies then this one is totally worth your time.

There! I said it. I gotta admit, it feels good to come clean. Now excuse me, I gotta go watch some co-eds get sliced open by a psycho. A gore junkie’s work is never done.

Welcome to Fangirly!

The day has finally come, the moment that only we have been waiting for, the launch of our new website, fangirly.com! We really have been excited to start and judging from some of the stuff that we have planned the fun is just beginning.

Like our tagline suggests, we consider ourselves to be fairly intelligent, discerning human beings, but you stick us in front of TV screen, movie screen, iPod/Pad screen, really any screen, and something strange happens. We lose all sense of how rational people behave. We squeal, laugh hysterically, sob, and do this weird thing that only select members of our family do, rub our hands together out of excitement.

We wanted to give you a little taste of the fun that is to come, so here are some of the features we will be doing here at Fangirly:

Sweet Streams: Do you ever sit down in front of your Netflix account and wonder what you should watch next? “Sweet Streams” will be our recommendations for what you should be streaming to your myriad of devices.

Grade A, Choice Picks: We’re going to give you our top picks for a variety of categories. Curious as to our top food fight scenes?  Top movies based on SNL skits? Top TV bromances? We are going to rank whatever our little hearts desire, because it gives us a false sense of superiority.  Join us, won’t you?

Fangirly Exposed!: Look we all have things that we are embarrassed to like, guilty pleasures, if you will. We are going to do the smart thing and announce ours on the internet!

Fanmanly: While we here at Fangirly enjoy our fair share of romance and polka dots and… other girly stuff, we still like to get down and dirty with the boys. (Insert innuendo of choice here). “Fanmanly” is our look at shows, movies, etc. that leave us feeling just a little more hardcore.

Anglohphiles Anonymous: Whether it be the accents, the dry wit, or the general regal air, we love the Brits and their entertainment (at least everything that makes it across the pond).  Check out picks for the finest that the UK has to offer.

Agree to Disagree: Let it be said that we agree on a lot, but there are also some things on which we will never see eye to eye.  Enjoy as Ellen wins every argument (No, Ellen didn’t write this).

In with the Old: Remember the day when movies and TV shows weren’t all spinoffs, sequels, remakes, and re-imaginings? Us, too! With this feature we hope to remind the future generations that we  were once able to come up with novel concepts.  Because we believe the children are our future.

Marry, Boff, Kill:  We once spent an entire camping trip playing this game, arguing over our choices, and disowning each other for killing certain people.  Now we are bringing the game to you guys so you can relish in watching us argue over (never going to happen) hypothetical situations.

Fangirly Crush of the Week: Pretty self-explanatory, but our spotlight on who is rocking our world.  At least for that week.

We have a lot planned and we are really excited to start.  Hopefully you will find the time to stop by and see what we are up to!  – by Ellen and Whitney
